This lesson explains how to answer True and False questions for IELTS.
You also have a Not Given option with this type of task.
Firstly, you will be presented with a list of facts.
You then have to look at the text in order to decide if the facts are true, false, or not given.
Below are some tips and strategies to help you answer this type of question.
    Tips
    • If the fact you are given is clearly in the reading it is True
    • If the reading says the opposite of the fact you’ve been given it is False
    • If it is not true or false, it is Not Given
Easier said than done, isn’t it? What makes this question difficult is an extra baggage one has to carry to keep in mind three possible answers: True, False, and Not given. Under timed conditions this baggage may be overwhelming in terms of time and accuracy.
And this is the reason I follow this strategy for such questions:
Convert the question into a simple form without worrying about true, false, and not given.
For instance, if this is the T/F/NG question:
Chile’s originate in South America and have been eaten for at least 9,500 years.
Mentally or in writing, rephrase it as
Did the Chile’s originate in South America and have they been eaten for more than 9,500 years?
Now dig into the text, if you get a positive or negative answer to this question your answers will be True or false. If you don’t get an answer at all, it is not given. Keep in mind if you are still not sure between False and Not given, go for Not given.
